My Mother’s immigrant grandparents hated Ireland and wouldn’t even discuss it. Wanted nothing to do with it. “I’m American” my great grandmother Mary Margaret Maguire would say. And refused offers to go back for visits.

Ashamed of some, proud of some. And I still don’t know the whole truth. I don’t think I want to know anymore.
Everyone has to live somewhere. Or come from somewhere. What difference does length of time matter? And no one experiences what their ancestors did, good or bad.
It’s only that probability increases with time. That’s what’s troublesome.
No such thing as “English-American” or “British-American”. The Revolution ended all that.
